DENVER - The 2004-05 all-Western Athletic Conference teams have been named, following a vote of the WACs head coaches.
The first team has one repeat performer from last year with Tulsas Jillian Robbins making her second appearance on the all-WAC first team in as many years. Louisiana Tech junior Tasha Crain makes her first appearance on the all-WAC team on the first team. Crain was also named the WAC Player of the Year. Crain gave the Lady Techsters their fourth Player of the Year honor in as many seasons. Amisha Carter earned the honor last season, and Cheryl Ford earned back-to-back honors.
Three different schools round out the first team. SMU freshman Janielle Dodds earns first team honors after having a stellar rookie campaign. Dodds was fourth in league games in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). Fresno State junior Amy Parrish was also a first team selection. Parrish ended the season third in WAC games in scoring, averaging 16.4 ppg. San Jose States Lamisha Augustine earns her first all-WAC honor after averaging 8.3 rpg and averaging 15.2 ppg.
The all-WAC second teamers were Lakiste Barkus, Louisiana Tech; Amber Jackson, San Jose State; Lauren Neaves, Rice; Amy Sanders, Hawaii; and Michelle Woods, Rice. Neaves was the only second teamer who has earned an honor before. She was named to the first team last season.
The all-Freshmen team contains two all-WAC honorees in Dodds and Jackson. Boise States Tasha Harris, Nevadas Meghan McGuire and UTEPs Shalana Taylor round out the all-Freshmen team.
SMUs Janielle Dodds earned the schools first WAC Newcomer of the Year honor. Dodds follows in Jillian Robbins footsteps from last season by being named first team all-WAC, to the all-Freshmen team and Newcomer of the Year.
Rices Cristy McKinney captured her first Coach of the Year honor, leading the Lady Owls to a 14-4 league record and an overall record of 21-8. McKinney is in her 13th season at Rice. The Lady Owls enter the WAC tournament with a nine-game winning streak.
The 2005 WAC Tournament will be held March 8-12, at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev. The womens tournament schedule includes two first round games on March 8, four quarterfinal games on March 9, semifinals on March 11 and the championship on March 12.
