DENVER Rice guard Jason McKrieth has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for February 28-March 5.
McKrieth, a senior from Schenectady, N.Y. (Schenectady HS) averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists in a pair of road victories for the Owls. On Thursday night at Louisiana Tech, he scored a season-high 24 points and made all eight of his free throw attempts. He then scored 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a double overtime win at SMU. For the week, he was 16-of-30 (.533) from the field and 13-of-14 (.929) from the free throw line. It is McKrieths first career WAC Player of the Week award and third for an Owl this this year.
The other nominations were freshman guard Donovan Morris, Fresno State; sophomore guard Matt Gibson, Hawaii; sophomore forward Nick Fazekas, Nevada; and senior forward Omar Thomas, UTEP.
