DENVER UTEPs Patrick Mutai and Louisiana Techs Brenda-Grace Hunt have been named the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
Mutai, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, won the prestigious Texas Relays 3000-meter steeplechase in a NCAA regional time of 8:49.45. He became the 10th Miner in the last 14 years to win the event at the Texas Relays. The time is the fastest in the WAC this year by nearly 36 seconds. The time is also the fifth fastest in the nation this year. Mutai led the race by as much as 70 meters midway through the race.
Hunt, a junior from Spanishtown, Jamaica, took first place at the Texas Relays in the javelin with a school-record throw of 56.91m. The mark is also the best throw in the country this season. Hunt was one of three Techsters to set a record at the Relays, as the womens 400 and 1,600-meter relays set a pair of school records in the process.
