DENVER SMUs Paul McNaughton was named the Western Athletic Conference mens tennis Player of the Week. The senior had a solid week both in singles and in doubles.
McNaughton, a senior from Hinsdale, Ill., went 2-1 at the No. 1 position last week and is now 8-4 at the top spot for SMU. He also partnered with Federico Murgier to go 2-0 at the No. 1 doubles position, to run their dual match record to 13-7. McNaughton won in straight sets over Sandy Farquharson from UTA 6-4, 7-5 and followed that up with another straight- set win over Jen Zelezng of Colorado 7-6, 7-5. His only loss during the week came against No. 1 Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor on April 10. In doubles McNaughton and Murgier defeated Digliodo/Tsuda of Colorado 8-6 to help clinch the doubles point for SMU. Against Baylor, the tandem upset the No. 4 ranked duo of Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga, 8-4 as SMU took the doubles point from No. 1 Baylor. The Mustangs are now 13-10 on the season. They travel to TCU and Rice this week to wrap up the regular season.
Other nominated: Fresno States Andy Sinn picked up two victories last week in three matches, each of which came against nationally-ranked competition ... Rices Rodrigo Garbiel was the only Owl to record two doubles wins, as Rice went 1-1 on the weekend. He had the match clincher against Wisconsin, defeating Mark Weinig 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for the Rice win ... Tulsas Lucques Maasdorp stepped into the singles line-up for the first time since February to win Tulsas lone singles match against Oklahoma.
