WAC MENS TENNIS NOTEBOOK
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - SMUs Paul McNaughton was named the Western Athletic Conference mens tennis Player of the Week. The senior had a solid week both in singles and in doubles.
McNaughton, a senior from Hinsdale, Ill., went 2-1 at the No. 1 position last week and is now 8-4 at the top spot for SMU. He also partnered with Federico Murgier to go 2-0 at the No. 1 doubles position, to run their dual match record to 13-7. McNaughton won in straight sets over Sandy Farquharson from UTA 6-4, 7-5 and followed that up with another straight- set win over Jen Zelezng of Colorado 7-6, 7-5. His only loss during the week came against No. 1 Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor on April 10. In doubles McNaughton and Murgier defeated Digliodo/Tsuda of Colorado 8-6 to help clinch the doubles point for SMU. Against Baylor, the tandem upset the No. 4 ranked duo of Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga, 8-4 as SMU took the doubles point from No. 1 Baylor. The Mustangs are now 13-10 on the season. They travel to TCU and Rice this week to wrap up the regular season.
Other nominated: Fresno States Andy Sinn picked up two victories last week in three matches, each of which came against nationally-ranked competition ... Rices Rodrigo Garbiel was the only Owl to record two doubles wins, as Rice went 1-1 on the weekend. He had the match clincher against Wisconsin, defeating Mark Weinig 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for the Rice win ... Tulsas Lucques Maasdorp stepped into the singles line-up for the first time since February to win Tulsas lone singles match against Oklahoma.
SCHEDULE CHANGES Due to scheduling conflicts this weekend between BYU, Fresno State and Boise State, the Bulldogs and Broncos had to make adjustments to their schedules.
Fresno State was originally slated to play BYU on Friday and Boise State on Sunday. However, conflicts arose between all three schools' schedules, forcing the cancellation of Fresno State's match with BYU.
In addition, the Bulldogs' contest with host and 31st-ranked Boise State has been switched to Saturday at noon PT. That match is the regular season finale for Fresno State.
ITA RANKINGS - Rice is the highest ranked WAC team in the most recent ITA rankings. This week, the Owls are No. 30. Boise State is now No. 31, while Tulsa is No. 37. Rounding out the top 60 is SMU at No. 50 and Fresno State at No. 60.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HONOLULU This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on the campus of the University of Hawaii, April 21-24. The 2004 champion, Rice, will look to defend its title.
