Boise State won its second WAC Men's Tennis Title Sunday, defeating Rice, 4-3, at the Hawaii Tennis Complex in Honolulu. The Broncos used all of four and half hours to earn the win, when Eric Roberson won in the third set at No. 5 singles, clinching the match. Boise State won its first WAC title in 2003.

The title match featured the past two champions as second-seeded Rice came into the tournament as the defending champions. The teams battled it out in doubles play. Boise State took the No. 2 court as Ikaika Jobe and Matias Silva defeated Tony Haerle and Filip Zivojinovic, 8-5. The Owls answered back with a win at No. 3 as Gabriel and Jason Mok upended Roberson and Brent Werbeck, 9-7. The match came down to the No. 1 court as BSU's Luke Shields and Thomas Schoeck edged Robert Searle and Ben Harknett, 9-7.

In singles play, Schoeck put Boise State up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Haerle at No. 2. Moments later Zivojinovic picked up a straight set win over Jobe at No. 4 and Knupfer knocked off Roghaar at No. 6 as Rice evened the match score at 2-2.

With three matches to play, the Owls took the advantage with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Harknett over Silva at No. 3. The Broncos tied it after Shields's 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win over Searle at the No. 1 court leaving the deciding match at the No. 5 court.

Gabriel won the opening set with relative ease, 6-1 and had match point in the second set tiebreaker. But Roberson gathered himself and captured the second and third sets igniting a wild celebration from the Boise State players.

The WAC also announced its 2005 Post-Season Honors. Rice junior Robert Searle earned the WAC's Player of the Year Award. Boise State's Luke Shields was named the WAC's Freshman of the Year. Boise State head coach Greg Patton earned WAC Coach of the Year, leading the Broncos to their second WAC title.
