DENVERTulsas Lindsay Tower and Fresno States Jamie Southern were named Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is Towers first honor of the season, while Southern has earned both player and pitcher honors this season.
Tower, a outfielder from Edmond, Okla., went 7-for-9 in three games against UTEP, including a 3-for-3 performance in the first game of the series. Tulsa went on to sweep the road series against UTEP. The freshman went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI in the third game, helping TU to its first run-rule victory of the season. Tower hit her 11th double of the season in the second game of the series, the most ever by a Tulsa freshman. She is currently tied for ninth for doubles in a season at TU. Her .304 batting average leads the team as well as her four triples.
Southern, a senior pitcher from Clovis, Calif., went undefeated in the circle as she posted her second-straight 3-0 weekend. The All-American also has not allowed a run for seven-straight games. Southern posted another pair of shutout wins to make it four consecutive starts in which she has blanked the opponent. At Louisiana Tech she pitched 16.0 scoreless innings to move her current streak to 36.1 scoreless innings, a mark that ranks No. 7 all-time at Fresno State. She scattered six hits, walking two and striking out 25 in three appearances, Southern also recorded another win in relief, as she has won six straight in the circle.
