FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's tennis player Katharina Winterhalter has been named to the Academic All-District VIII women's at-large team, announced today. The team is voted upon by sports information directors from the district.
Winterhalter, a civil engineering major who owns a 3.56 grade point average, was one of 11 members of the District VIII team, all of whom will advance to the national ballot for consideration for the Academic All-America team.

District VIII is comprised of universities from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.

Playing at No. 1 singles virtually the entire season, Winterhalter went 27-14 (16-9 dual) in singles and helped lead the Bulldogs to a fourth consecutive WAC title, winning the clinching match in Fresno State's 4-0 shutout of Rice in the championship contest. Led by Winterhalter, Fresno State went 16-9 and played in the NCAA Tournament for a 10th consecutive year.

Winterhalter was a first-team All-WAC honoree and entered the postseason ranked 99th in the nation. She was just as successful in doubles as she was in singles, posting a 21-10 record, including 15-2 at No. 3 doubles with Fadzai Masiyazi.

Winterhalter finished the season with 78 singles victories in her career, tied for fifth-best in program history.

In the classroom, Winterhalter has also excelled, earning Dean's List honors four consecutive semesters. She was a member of the Academic All-WAC team last year and is expected to be again this season (the team has not yet been named).

Winterhalter was not the only Bulldog to receive academic awards. Lucia Tallo was named to the Academic All-District VIII second team. A mass communications and journalism major with a 3.94 grade point average, Tallo also received the medal for Arts and Humanities during commencement.
