Rice's Savery Named To All-America Team

HATTIESBURG, Miss. Rice freshman pitcher/first-baseman Joe Savery has been named third team all-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA), the organization announced on Tuesday.

Savery, the Western Athletic Conference's player of the year and Collegiate Baseball's Louisville Slugger freshman player of the year, was one of only two freshmen in the country to be selected to one of the NCBWA's three all-America teams.

Savery is listed as a third team all-America DH/ATH for his dual skills as a hitter and pitcher. He led the Western Athletic Conference in hitting with a .382 average and ranked among the league's best in on-base percentage (.471, first), runs scored (49, third), hits (78, third) and doubles (17, fourth). As a starting pitcher the standout from nearby Lamar High School went 8-5 on the season with a conference-leading 2.43 earned run average. In his debut season of Division I baseball, Savery struck out 129 hitters in 118.2 innings. He held 442 batters faced to a combined .235 average.

After injuring his non-pitching hand hustling after a foul ball in the Owls' first game of the New Orleans Super Regional (June 11), Savery made his scheduled start on the mound the following day against the number one Green Wave and pitched six gutsy shutout innings. The Rice baseball team concluded its season Monday at the super regional, finishing the year with a 45-19 record.
