2006 WAC Women's Golf Championship 7/1/2005 12:00:00 AM 2006 WAC Women's Golf Championship WHAT: 2006 Women's Golf ChampionshipWHERE: Coyote Creek Golf Club, San Jose, Calif.WHEN: Monday-Wednesday, April 24-26, 2006PREVIEW: The 2006 WAC Championship travels to San Jose, Calif., and Coyote Creek Golf Club. This year?™s Championship will be held April 24-26, 2006. Drawing inspiration from the land?™s natural contours, Jack Nicklaus has designed the Tournament Course to reward every skill level and to take advantage of the picturesque terrain. The WAC Championship will play a par-72 course that plays 6,143 yards.There will be a new champion this year with the departure of Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane had won the past seven championships. San Jose State is the top returning school, taking second a year ago. There are five players back that finished in the top 10 last season, led by San Jose State sophomore, who placed second. Fellow Spartans, Johanna Lundberg and Lindsey Martino finished fourth and tenth, respectively. Fresno State placed two in the top 10 in 2005. Sophomore Laura Luethke placed fourth, giving her the Freshman of the Year honors. Senior Meggie Fagundes returns for her final season after tying for 10th last year.Leading this year?™s field on the individual side are Renee Skidmore of Idaho and Luethke. Skidmore and Luethke are two of three medalist on the season. Skidmore brought home the Palmetto title, while Luethke won the San Jose State Invitational. WAC new comer New Mexico State is led by Lehua Wise. Wise is ranked among the top 150 golfers in the country.On the team side, the field is wide open. San Jose State leads the field as the lone team ranked in the top 50 by both Golfstat and Golfweek. The Spartans have also brought home three team titles this year. New Mexico State, Idaho and Fresno State have all been among the top four in the conference all season. With all the rain in the California this year, the tournament could be decided much like last year.
