FRISCO, Texas - University of Nevada forward Nick Fazekas (Nevada/Arvada, Colo.), the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, has been chosen to represent the United States as part of the 2005 U.S. Under-21 basketball team. Fazekas was one of 12 players selected to the squad after team trials were held in Dallas, Texas. The 12-member U.S. U21 squad that will look to defend the USA's gold medal at the 2005 FIBA U21 World Championship in Mar de Plata, Argentina, Aug. 5-14.
In his first two seasons at the University of Nevada, Fazekas helped lead the Wolf Pack to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Sweet Sixteen in 2004 and the second round in 2005. This past season, Fazekas led the WAC and ranked 14th in the nation in scoring at 20.7 points per game.
The 12 players who will seek gold are point guards junior Marcus Williams (Connecticut), sophomore Rajon Rondo (Kentucky) and senior Mardy Collins (Temple); senior shooting guards J.J. Redick (Duke), Justin Gray (Wake Forest), Allan Ray (Villanova) and sophomore Rudy Gay (Connecticut); forwards sophomore Glen Davis (LSU), senior Taj Gray (Oklahoma), senior Curtis Withers (Charlotte), junior Terrence Roberts (Syracuse) and junior Nick Fazekas (Nevada).
The team will be coached by St. Joseph's Phil Martelli.
