Two WAC Runners Take Cross Country Titles
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ?“ Boise State?™s Ty Axtman and San Jose State?™s Tiffany Hall have been named the Western Athletic Conference men?™s and women?™s cross country Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Axtman, a junior from Elma, Wash., finished third at the NNU Invitational in Nampa, Idaho. Axtman posted a time of 18:15.00 in the 6k race. Axtman finished just behind Bronco standout, Forest Braden who was running unattached. The third-place finished helped the Broncos to a third-place finish with 74 points.

Hall, a junior from Vacaville, Calif., finished in first place at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational with a time of 18:23.90. She helped the San Jose State women to a second-place finish. Hall has two top-five finishes this year. Her first-place finish was the first by a Spartans harrier since 2001.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA ?“ The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000).

BULLDOGS WIN STANISLAUS TITLE ?“ Fresno State came out of the gate with authority as the Bulldogs captured their first meet of the season at the CS Stanislaus Invitational, which was a 6K meet held at the Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto, Calif. The Bulldogs, who had six runners crack the school?™s all-time 6K list, captured their first invitational title since Sept. 6, 2003 and that came at the CS Stanislaus Invitational as well when Fresno State won the five-team field.

SJSU?™S HALL TAKES AGGIE TITLE ?“ San Jose State junior Tiffany Hall finished first at the Aggie Cross Country Open to lead the Spartans. The women?™s team finished second. Hall, the Spartans?™ top runner for the 2005 season, finished the course with a time of 18:17.90, an improvement from last week?™s meet in San Francisco where she ran the 5K course in a time of 18:23.1.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP ?“ The 2005 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Boise, Idaho. This year?™s championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at Eagle Island State Park. There will be two new team champions crowned with the departure of the Rice men and SMU women.

NCAA REGIONALS ?“ The 2005 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country. They will all be held Saturday, Nov. 12. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Palo Alto, Calif (Stanford). The Mountain Region will be held in Provo, Utah (BYU), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.
