Three Individuals Take Titles in WAC Cross Country

XBOX LIVE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ?“ Utah State?™s Trever Ball and Tiffany Strickland have been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Ball, a senior from Hyrum, Utah, won the Montana State Invitational with a time of 24:35. He topped the seven-team field in the five-mile race. Ball will next compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.

Strickland, a senior from Orem, Utah, won her second race of the season, taking home the Montana State Invitational. She posted a time of 17:16 in the three-mile race. Strickland edged teammate Amy Egan for the win.

Other men nominees included: Ty Axtman, Boise State and Kevin Friesen, Idaho.
Other women nominees included: Dee Olson, Idaho.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA ?“ The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000).

THOMPSON WINS NMSU KACHINA CLASSIC ?“ Senior Grace Thomson took the women?™s individual title at the Kachina Classic to lead the New Mexico State women?™s cross country team to second place overall. Thomson?™s winning time was 18:49, 13 seconds better than former Aggie Rachael Cuellar, who was running unattached.

UTAH STATE WINS MONTANA STATE INVITATIONALS ?“ Tiffany Strickland won the women?™s race and Trever Ball claimed the men?™s race to lead Utah State?™s cross country teams to their respective team titles at the Montana State Invitational. Strickland won the women?™s three-mile run by 14 seconds over teammate Amy Egan. Ball won the men?™s five-mile race by 11 seconds over Joe Bendoski of Utah Valley State.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP ?“ The 2005 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Boise, Idaho. This year?™s championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at Eagle Island State Park. There will be two new team champions crowned with the departure of the Rice men and SMU women.

NCAA REGIONALS ?“ The 2005 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country. They will all be held Saturday, Nov. 12. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Palo Alto, Calif (Stanford). The Mountain Region will be held in Provo, Utah (BYU), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.
