New Mexico State Leads WAC Volleyball With 3-0 Start

PLAYER OF THE WEEK ?“s New Mexico State?™s Kim Oguh has been named the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 5. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for the Aggies.
sThe El Paso, Texas, native had a total of 34 kills in three matches, hitting .386 with only seven errors. She also tallied 11 block assists during the week. Oguh was named 2005 Hilton Las Cruces Classic Tournament MVP, hammering 15 kills, had five block assists and three solo blocks in the Aggies?™ 3-1 win over Cincinnati.s She also had eight kills, hitting.615 in the Aggies?™ 3-0 sweep of Texas-Pan American.s Against the New Mexico Lobos on Aug. 29, she had 11 kills and three block assists.s

Other nominees included: Boise State?™s Telia Peterson had 11 kills, nine digs and one block against Wyoming. She had 15 kills, hit .143 (15-9-42), and added 14 digs and four blocks against Northern Colorado ... Fresno State?™s Kasie Spencer had 21 kills in a, 3-1, victory over North Carolina, and hit .524 against Long Island at the USF Powerade/Asics Classic … Hawai'i?™s Kanoe Kamana`o averaged 14.50 assists per game, 3.00 digs per game and 1.00 blocks per game in the classic. She earned all-tournament team honors at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic … Idaho?™s Erin Curtis was selected to the LMU all-tournament team after leading the Vandals to a 2-1 record last week … Louisiana Tech?™s Ambra Hayes had 47 kills in 12 games as the Lady Techsters won three matches … Nevada?™s Carly Sorensen averaged 4.18 kills, and 4.41 points while hitting .252 in three matches for the Pack in the Sands Regency/SBC Tournament. … San Jose State?™s Colleen Burke had 33 kills in 12 games earning Falcon Invitational all-tournament honors.

WEEK THREE IN THE WAC ?“ In week three of the 2005 season, only two teams will play at home. Utah State will host BYU on Sept. 10. Hawai'i will host the Mauna Loa Macademia Nut Challenge.
sFresno State, Nevada and San Jose State will all play in California. Fresno State will play at the Santa Clara Tournament, while Nevada will play at the Sacramento State Tournament. San Jose State is on the road another week at the Cal Poly Tournament.
sNew Mexico State does not have far to travel playing in a tournament at rival UTEP. Louisiana Tech will remain in the south playing at Mercer. Boise State will play in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Tournament, while Idaho will play at a tournament at Washington State.

AGGIES CLIMBING THE CHARTS ?“ With a solid senior year, Utah State opposite side hitter Zuzana Cernianska will end her Aggie career as one of the best players ever at Utah State as she currently ranks second all-time in kills (1,349), service aces (111), and attempts (3,261), sixth in digs (786), eighth in hitting percentage (.230), and 10th in assists (915).s She is also one of only three players in school history to be named a two-time first team all-league selection, one of only four players in school history to record 1,000 kills, and one of only two players to ever be named Freshman of the Year in a conference.
sJunior setter Dominique Arsenault currently ranks ninth all-time at Utah State with 1,121 assists, while senior middle blocker Ingrid Roth currently ranks sixth all-time in total blocks with 279 and block assists with 252.s

PACKING THE STANDS ?“ New Mexico State set a school record in attendance in its sweep of rival New Mexico. There were 3,183 fans in the Pan American Center to see the Aggies season opener on Aug. 29.
sHawai'i continues to pack the stands with over 6,000 fans attending all each of the Rainbow Wahine?™s matches last week.The 7,573 that saw Hawai'i?™s match against No. 5 Penn State was the third highest attended match in the nation this season. The 7,247 that saw the Rainbow Wahine defeat No. 7 USC was the fourth highest attended match this season.

LADY TECHSTERS OFF TO FAST START ?“ Louisiana Tech?™s 4-1 start is one of the Lady Techsters fastest starts. The last time Louisiana Techs started 4-1 was in 1995. This is the best start by Heather Mazeitis-led team. Louisiana Tech captured the title at the Southern Spikers Select Classic. This week, the Lady Techsters look to increase their work total on the road at the Mercer Tournament in Macon, Ga. Louisiana Tech?™s fastest start was the 6-1 start in 1989.

AGAINST THE BEST ?“ The WAC is 1-6 against ranked teams this season. Hawai'i captured the league?™s first win against a top 25 opponent when it swept then No. 7 USC. The Rainbow Wahine have two losses to Penn State and a loss to top-ranked Nebraska. Nevada is 0-2 with losses to then-No.s 18 San Diego and then-No. 13 UCLA. San Jose State fell to then-No. 10 Wisconsin. This week, Hawai'i will take on its fifth ranked team in six matches when it takes on No. 10 UCLA.s Fresno State will face No. 18 UC Santa Barbara.

WELCOME TO THEs WAC ?“ This season, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State join the WAC.
sLast year, New Mexico State was 30-3, 15-0 in the Sun Belt and won the conference tournament. The other Aggies, Utah State, were 9-18, 5-13 in the Big West. The Idaho Vandals were 17-13 last season, 9-9 in the Big West.
sBoth New Mexico State and Idaho lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies lost to San Diego in the opening round, while the Vandals lost to Washington in the first round
s In 2003, both Idaho and New Mexico State advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Vandals lost to Hawai'i in Honolulu in the first round. New Mexico State lost to BYU in the first round. The Aggies were a perfect 15-0 in the Sun Belt in 2003.

TWO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS ?“ This season, the WAC will have two 2004 conference champions vying for the title. Both Hawai'i and New Mexico State won conference titles and tournaments last season. The Rainbow Wahine had a perfect 13-0 season as the WAC champion. The Aggies had their second-straight 15-0 perfect season as the Sun Belt champs.

CHANGE OF VENUE ?“ San Jose State has changed its volleyball home this season. San Jose State moves from the Events Center to Spartan Gym. The Spartans played over 100 matches at the Events Center. San Jose State is no stranger to Spartan Gym. The Spartans have a 129-57 record there where they have played at least one match every season.

VOLLEYBALL FORMAT ?“ For the first time since 2001 the WAC will not compete in divisions. The teams competing in the WAC this season are: Boise State, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State. This season?™s format will be a double-round robin. Each team will face the other eight at home and on the road.

REGIONAL SITES SET ?“ The 2005 NCAA Volleyball Championship will be the 25th. The NCAA Division I Women?™s Volleyball Committee has announced the following sites for regional competition of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women?™s Volleyball Championships. The first sight is the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., along with thes Recreation Building in University Park, Pa.; the Maples Pavillion in Stanford, Calif., and the G. Rollie White Coliseum in College Station, Texas. The University ofs Nebraska, Penn State University, Stanford University and Texas A&M University are the hosts for the regionals, which will be held December 8-11. The first and second rounds will be held December 1-4 in sites yet to be determined. The Final Four will be held December 15-17 in San Antonio, Texas.

RETURNING ALL-WAC PLAYERS ?“ Of the 12 first-team all-WAC players in 2004, seven should return for the 2004 season, including Hawai'i?™s Kanoe Kamana`o, the WAC?™s Player of the Year and Tara Hittle, the WAC?™s Freshman of the Year. Hawai'i also returns first-team all-WAC selections Alicia Arnott and Victoria Prince. Nevada?™s Salaia Salave`a, San Jose State?™s Jessie Shull and Boise State?™s Cameron Flunder also return from the 2004 first team. Four of the second-team all-WAC performers will also return this season, including Nevada?™s Tristin Johnson and Karly Sipherd. Hawai'i has a duo returning, including Susie Boogaard and Ashley Watanabe.
