WAC CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO PALO ALTO ?“ The 2006 edition of the WAC Championship returns to Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio. This year will mark a new champion for the first time nine years, with the departure of SMU. The Championship will be held Feb. 22-25, 2006.
XBOX LIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ?“ New Mexico State?™s Kelly Freeburn has been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference women?™s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.
Freeburn, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va., won the 50 and 100 freestyles for the Aggies in their narrow 145-135 home loss to I-25 rivals New Mexico on Jan. 28. Her respective winning times were 24.48 seconds and 53.42 seconds, both season bests. Freeburn also placed second in the 200 freestyle (behind teammate Carolyn Bohm) in a time of 1:57.59, another season-best performance for her. She swam the leadoff leg in the 400 freestyle relay which saw the Aggies place second in a season-best time of 3:36.75.

HAWAI'I RECEIVES VOTES NATIONALLY ?“ Hawai'i fell from the College Coaches Swim Coaches Association (CSCAA) poll, coming in 27th. The Wahine take on 24th ranked Washington this weekend, a meet that could put them back in the listing.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA ?“ The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000). Only Idaho and New Mexico State sponsor swimming and diving. Northern Arizona and San Diego continue as affiliate members.
