DENVER ?“ Fresno State?™s Melanie Gloria has been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Women?™s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of January 30.
Gloria, a freshman from Montreal, Canada, made her debut as a Bulldog in impressive fashion. The Canadian stunned fourth-ranked Alice Barnes of No. 1 Stanford, 6-4, 1-6, (10-5) at No. 1 singles. The Bulldogs fell to the Cardinal 5-2 in the season opener Jan. 27, but it was the first time since 1999 the Bulldogs have been able to muster at least two points in a dual match against Stanford. Then on Jan. 28, Fresno State hosted No. 69 Santa Barbara, in its home opener. The Bulldogs won all nine matches for a 7-0 shutout of the Gauchos. Gloria easily beat UCSB's Chelsea Glynn 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Gloria and fellow Canadian freshman Vanessa Heroux handled Vyhnis/Glynn 8-3.
Other women?™s tennis nominee: Boise State?™s Hadley McFarlane recorded wins over Oregon, Portland and Santa Clara … Nevada?™s Myriam Bouchlaka earned two wins as the Wolf Pack went 1-2 last week.
