Nevada Wins WAC Tournament on Penalty Kicks

In another tightly contested battle, Nevada advanced to its first NCAA Tournament by defeating top-seeded Fresno State in penalty kicks, 4-2. After fighting to a 0-0 tie in double overtime, senior Aivi Luik sealed the win for the Wolf Pack. This was Fresno State's third WAC Tournament final, while it was Nevada's first trip to the championship match. This was the first time that all the matches in the WAC Tournament were shutouts. It was also the first WAC Tournament to be decided on penalty kicks.

There was no scoring in the first half behind solid defensive play lead by Fresno State goalkeeper Angie Larsen and Nevada goalkeeper Caitlin Holmes. The drought continued into the second half. Neither Holmes or Larsen allowed a goal in the tournament.

The NCAA Championship Bracket will be revealed Monday, Nov. 6 from 3-4 ET on ESPNEWS.

In the semifinals, top-seeded Fresno State advanced to its third WAC Tournament final with a thrilling win over fourth-seeded San Jose State in double overtime. With eight seconds remaining in the second overtime, senior midfielder Antonea Lugo knocked in a shot off the cross from junior Andrea Salvador. Last season, the Bulldogs defeated the Spartans, 1-0, in the championship match. The Wolf Pack defeated Utah State, 2-0, behind two goals from sophomore Randee Robinson. The goals were the first two of the season for Robinson and helped the Wolf Pack advance to their first ever WAC Tournament final.

In the first day of competition, San Jose State captured  the first match of the 2006 WAC Soccer Tournament. The fourth-seeded Spartans tied fifth-seeded Boise State 0-0 in double overtime. San Jose State advanced to Friday's semifinal on penalty kicks, 4-2. Host and third-seeded Nevada defeated Hawai`i, 3-0. Samantha Miller, a first-team all-WAC selection, scored two of  Nevada's three goals.
