WAC Gymnastics in Full Swing

The Boise State Gymnastics team hosts two meets in four days coming up. The Broncos first host WAC opponent Utah State (ranked 30th nationally) and Div. II Seattle Pacific (ranked 49th among Div. I schools) Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Taco Bell Arena. Then, Monday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. the Broncos will host 25th ranked BYU. Boise State?™s season average is 190.425. Utah State?™s everage is 192.108. Seattle Pacific?™s average is 190.095. Brigham Young?™s average is 192.756. Against Boise State, the Aggies are 49-11-0 overall and 16-4 on the road. Last year the Aggies beat the Broncos both at home and on the road with scores of 194.550-193.400 at Boise State, and then again the next week at home 195.450-194.200. Against Seattle Pacific, Utah State is 5-0 overall and 4-0 at neutral sites.

XBOX LIVE GYMNAST OF THE WEEK ?“ Utah State?™s Meagan Lewis has been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week for the week of Feb. 13. This is the first WAC Gymnast of the Week honor for Lewis, but the third for the Aggies.

Lewis, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., won her second-straight all-around with a season-high 38.900. Utah State recorded its highest score of the season, 193.350 to win a tri-team meet with Texas Woman?™s (191.125) and Washington (190.400) last week. The Aggies improved to 4-8 with the win, and are 0-3 in the WAC. Lewis tied her season-high score on vault (9.750), she scored a 9.750 on bars and recorded a new season-high on floor (9.800), placing in a tie for fifth, tenth, and first respectively. On the beam she scored a 9.775 to tie for fourth.

Other nominees included: Alexis Tsurmoto of Sacramento State led the Hornets to a season-high 192.500 with a 9.975 in bars. … Renae Moneymaker of San Jose State won the all-around with an all-around score of 38.800 as the Spartans scored a 192.450 ... Leah Sakhtab ofs Southern Utah tied for first with a 9.800 on vaulf.

SAN JOSE STATE ACHIEVES HIGHEST RANKING - The San Jose State University women?™s gymnastics team has been ranked No. 34 in the nation and No. 5 in the West Region it was announced Monday, February 13.s Both rankings are the highest national and regional rankings achieved in San Jose State?™s gymnastics program history. The Spartans have a team high score of 193.125, which they scored in their defeat of Cal State Fullerton on January 27. Earlier this season, they defeated #30 Utah State 188.450 to 187.925 in Fullerton, Calif. on January 8. More recently, on February 3, they defeated #27 Illinois-Chicago 192.950 to 190.225. With the No. 5 ranking in the West Region, the Spartans are on pace to qualify as a team for the NCAA Regional Championships for the first time since 2003 and the second time in program history.

THE WAC IN THE POLLS - Southern Utah has the highest ranking in the most recent polls. The Thunderbirds are ranked No. 22. They also hold a No. 5 ranking in the North Central rankings. Utah State is ranked No. 30, while San Jose State is ranked No. 34. The Spartans hold a No. 5 ranking in the West Region, while the Aggies are No. 7 in the North Central rankings. Sacramento State is ranked No. 41, while Boise State holds the No. 42 spot. Cal State Fullerton rounds out the WAC teams with a No. 46 ranking.

2006 WAC GYMNASTICS MEET ?“ The first WAC Gymnastics Championship since 1993 will be help in Logan, Utah on the campus of Utah State. The meet will rotate schools every year. This year?™s meet will be held March 25.

REGIONAL AND NATIONALS ?“ The west coast will be the site NCAA Championship this season as Oregon State and Gill Coliseum will host the 2005 NCAA Championship on April 20-22, 2006.

Erica Ficarrotta won the all-around and Cal State Fullerton rode a big margin on uneven parallel bars to a 191.075-188.875 WAC victory over Boise State ... Boise State narrowly won the other three events but was outscored 47.900 to 44.475 on bars to give Fullerton its victory ... the Titans are now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the WAC ...s Jaime Howe was Fullerton?™s only event winner, posting a 9.800 to lead a 1 through 5 sweep of the bars.

Sacramento State Hornets (4-7, 2-0 WAC)
Sophomore Alexis Tsurumoto tied for first on bars to help lead Sacramento State to a second-place finish at a four-team meet hosted by Cal ... the Hornets scored a season-high 192.500, while 11th-ranked UCLA finished first at 196.500 ... host Cal was third at 190.850 and UC Davis scored 190.300 to place fourth ... Tsurumoto was one of five gymnasts to score 9.875 and tie for first.

Southern Utah Thunderbirdss (3-4, 0-1 WAC)
Southern Utah will host the second of four-straight home meets when the Thunderbirds welcome West Virginia to the Centrum ... SU is coming off its best showing of the season, a 194.825-194.050 win over BYU... the Thunderbirds posted individual and team season-highs on all four events en route to their highest team total ... with the score SUU moved up one spot in this week?™s national rankings, to 22nd ... WVU is coming off its best road score, a 194.200 posted at Florida, Feb. 10.

Utah State Aggies (2-7, 0-3 WAC)
No. 30 Utah State (4-8, 0-3) will travel to Boise, Idaho to take on 42nd ranked Boise State (4-2, 0-2) in the Aggies second WAC competition of the year. Seattle Pacific (2-5), currently ranked 49th, will also be participating in the meet. Competition is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. MST at the Taco Bell Arena on Friday, Feb. 17.
