SAN ANTONIO - The 2006 Western Athletic Conference Women?™s Swimming and Diving Championship began today with Hawai`i winning the 200-yard medley relay and Hawai`i capturing the 800-yard freestyle relay. Hawai`i is in first place with 80 points after day one of the four-day event.

Hawai`i?™s team of Nicole Mackey, Katie Clewett, Ellike Heimbach and Bache Atkins took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.50. Nevada was second with a time of 1:47.29. It was the third-straight year that Hawai`i opened the meet with a win in the first event.
In the only other race of the day, Hawai`i again took the gold medal with a win in the 800 freestyle relay. The Rainbow Wahine team of Bache Atkins, Claudia Barsi, Jessica Affleck and Nicole Mackey won with a time of 7:24.03.
After one day of competition, Hawai`i is the leader with 80 points. Nevada is second with 66 points followed by Northern Arizona with 62 points and San Jose State is fourth with 60 ponits. In their first WAC swimming meet, Idaho and New Mexico State are tied for fifth with 56 points followed by San Diego with 48 points.
Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
