Nevada Takes the Lead at WAC Swimming and Diving Championship

SAN ANTONIO - Nevada took its first lead at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship. The Wolf Pack captured the lead in the third day of competition despite not winning a single event.

San Diego's Ashley Swart won her second individual event of the meet with a time of 4:22.14 in the 400-yard individual medley. Yesterday, Swart won the 200 individual medley. Northern Arizona's Emily Simon took second and Hawai'i??s Jessica Affleck was third.

Hawai'i's Mia Broden was first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.46. Nevada teammates Michaela Schmidt (55.61) and Kim Kabesh (55.83) finished second and third, respectively. The Rainbow Wahine also captured the next event as Bache Atkins won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.42. It was her second win of the meet as she won the 500 free on Thursday. Northern Arizona's Alexis Buckley and Corie Collins took second and third, respectively.

Idaho's Jo Jo Miller captured the Vandals?? first gold medal, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.81, edging out Hawai'i's Katie Clewett and Vandal Jenny McAnney (1.05.30). Hawai'i's Nicole Mackey took top honors in the 100 backstroke with an NCAA qualifying time of 54.22. Mackey also took gold in this event at the 2004 championship.

Hawai'i won the final two events as the Rainbow Wahine took the top three spots in 3-meter diving. Junior Megan Farrow captured the gold medal with a score of 355.25. The Rainbow Wahine team of Mackey, Clewett, Broden and Ellike Heimbech won the 400 medley relay in 3:47.04.

After three days of competition, Nevada has taken the lead with 505 points, while Hawai'i is second with 493.5. Northern Arizona is third with 409.5 points followed by San Jose State with 357.5, Idaho 260.5, New Mexico State 218 and San Diego 150. New Mexico State and Idaho are competing in their first WAC championship.

Action concludes tomorrow at the Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m., the first two heats of the 1650 free begin at 4:40 p.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
