DENVER ?“ New Mexico State first baseman Luke Hopkins and San Jose State right-handed pitcher Josh Amberson have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 20-26.
Hopkins, a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M. (St. Pius X HS), hit .500 (10-20) with three home runs and 15 RBI in four games for the Aggies. In a three-game series against Northern Colorado, Hopkins was 8-for-15 with 14 RBI, three home runs and six runs scored. On Saturday, he was 4-for-5 with five RBI, and on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with eight RBI and two home runs. It is Hopkins?™s second career WAC Player of the Week award.
Amberson, a junior from Everett, Wash. (Edmonds College), allowed just one run on four hits (all singles) and four walks in a 6-1 win over Loyola Marymount on Sunday. He struck out eight batters in 7.2 innings of work. It is Amberson?™s first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and second for a Spartan this year.
The other player of the week nominations were Hawai'i junior outfielder Jorge Franco, Nevada sophomore DH Matt Bowman, and Sacramento State senior first baseman Brian Blauser.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were Fresno State senior Doug Fister, Hawai'i junior Ian Harrington, and Nevada junior Ryan Rodriguez.
