WAC TRAVELS TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ?“ With all but one team in competition this week, WAC track and field takes to the Pacific Northwest. The University of Washington is hosting a pair of meets, Saturday, Feb. 11 and Sunday, Feb. 12. Cal State Northridge, Hawai'i, Idaho and Nevada will all make the trip to Seattle. Utah State will begin it preperation for the WAC Championship as it travels to Boise, Idaho for the Holiday Inn Team Invitational, which is being competed at Jacksons Track, the host site for the this year?™s conference finale.
XBOX LIVE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ?“ Boise State?™s Mattias Jons and New Mexico State?™s Sandra Anane have been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference men?™s and women?™s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Jons, a senior from Bjuraker, Sweden, in three weeks, three track and field meets has posted three consecutive school records in the 35-pound weight throw. Competing in the weight throw at the United Heritage Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, Jons broke this Bronco record in the event with a throw of 72-4.50 (22.06m). The mark, which also a NCAA automatic qualifying mark, is the third best collegiate throw this season.
Anane, a junior from El Paso, Texas, had a fantastic day for the Aggies, breaking school records in both the long and triple jump. In finishing second in the long jump, Anane leaped 19-2.5, over a two-inch improvement over the previous mark. In the triple jump, Anane won the event, breaking her own school record, set last week with a jump of 42-3.5, provisionally qualifying her for the NCAA Championships. Anane also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing seventh. She currently ranks 11th in the country in the triple jump.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA ?“ The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000). The WAC will added CS Northridge as an affiliate member for the Indoor season for both men and women.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO BOISE ?“ The 2006 edition of the WAC Championship returns to Idaho Sports Center and Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho. The meet will be held Feb. 22-25 with the multi-events on Feb. 22 and 23, and the preliminaries and finals on Feb. 24 and 25.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ?“ The 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship returns to Fayetteville, Ark., March 10-11. The University of Arkansas is hosting the event.
