DENVER ?“ San Jose State?™s Shina Cardeno has been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week for the week of Feb. 27. This is the first WAC Gymnast of the Week honor for the sophomore.

Cardeno, a vault specialist from Bakersfield, Calif., broke the San Jose State vault record with a 9.925 to shatter the five-year-old school record of 9.875. The 9.925 was the highest vault score in the WAC this season. The old record was set by Dani Albright on Feb. 16, 2001, against Sacramento State and UC Davis. Cardeno won the vault for the third consecutive meet. Her score helped San Jose State break the vault team score with a 48.950, breaking the old record of 48.875 set earlier this season. On Sunday at the Master's Classic, she scored a 9.750 to tie for sixth place in the four-team event.
