DENVER ?“ Fresno State?™s Melanie Gloria has been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Women?™s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of February 27.
Gloria, a freshman from Montreal, Canada, was a perfect 5-0 in doubles and singles combined over the weekend as the Bulldogs beat Montana, Oklahoma State and No. 37 UNLV on their way to capturing the UNLV Rebel Classic Title. On Sunday, Feb. 26, Gloria won a thriller, beating No. 18 Elena Gantcheva of UNLV 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Gloria was down 4-0 in the third set, rallied and overcame Glantcheva to clinch Fresno State's 4-3 tournament victory.
Other women?™s tennis nominees: Tatiana Ganzha of Boise State went 2-1 in singles and doubles competition to lead the Broncos to a third place finish at the Lady Rebel Invitational … Edine van Beusekom of New Mexico State played at the No. 2 singles position and finished undefeated two singles wins … Andrea Barker of Utah State was 2-0 last week with both a singles and doubles win.
