DENVER ?“ Louisiana Tech right fielder Jericho Jones and Sacramento State left-handed pitcher Mick Joyce have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 6-12.
Jones, a freshman from Corinth, Texas (Lake Dallas HS), was named the MVP of the Baylor Classic after hitting .583 (7-12) with eight RBI, six runs and three home runs in three games. For the week, he was 7-for-13 (.538), was walked twice and stole a base. It is Jones?™ first career WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Bulldog this year.
Joyce, a junior from Temecula, Calif. (Chaparral HS), pitched a complete-game shutout in Sacramento State?™s 6-0 win over Northern Colorado on Sunday. He allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out eight to improve to 4-0 on the season. It is Joyce?™s first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and first for a Hornet player this year.
The other player of the week nominations were senior outfielder Matt Inouye, Hawai'i; senior outfielder Shawn Scobee, Nevada; senior second baseman Jason Long, New Mexico State; and junior first baseman Brandon Fromm, San Jose State.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Steven Wright, Hawai'i; freshman Luke Burnett, Louisiana Tech; and senior Wesley Dorsett, Nevada.
