WAC IN THE DANDY DOZEN Trackwire.com features 11 WAC track and field stars in this weeks Dandy Dozen rankings. Idaho's Russ Winger is ranked fourth in the shot put. Boise State's Mattias Jons is third in the hammer, while fellow Broncos, Keron Francis, is second in the javelin and Steffan Jonsson is fifth in the discus. For the women, Idaho's Dee Olsen ranks eighth in the 1,500 meters. Louisiana Tech's 4x400-meter relay squad sits 12th, while Techster Nina Gilbert is 10th in the 400m. Fresno State's Mallory Webb is ranked ninth in the javelin.
Click here for a .pdf version of the WAC Track and Field Notes.XBOX LIVE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Boise State's Mattias Jons and Nevada's Caira Hane have been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference men's and women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Jons, a senior from Bjuraker, Sweden, continued to re-write the Boise State record book for the hammer when he won the event with school record mark of 230-8 (70.30m). His throw, which was the first time he his career to surpassed the 70-meter mark, broke his previous school record of 227-10 (69.44m) set during the 2005 season. The throw was also the third best collegiate hammer throw in the country this season.
Hane, a senior from Hillsboro, Ore., finished first in the hammer throw at the Woody Wilson Classic with a NCAA provisional throw of 57.33m. She also finished second in the javelin with a provisional throw of 45.66m. The first place athlete was unattached.

BOISE STATE REMAINS IN TOP 25 The Boise State men's team reached its highest ranking this week, coming in the Trackwire.com top 25 at 14. The Broncos are led by three members of the Dandy Dozen, Trackwire's ranking system. Mattias Jons is ranked third in the hammer, with Keron Francis coming in second in the javelin and Steffan Jonsson ranking fifth in the discus.

MenWAC CHAMPIONSHIP TRAVELS TO THE ISLAND The 2006 edition of the WAC Championship travels to Honolulu and Cooke Field. The meet will be held Feb. 10-13 with the multi-events on May 10 and 11, and the preliminaries and finals on May 12 and 13. The Boise State men and Louisiana Tech women look for the season sweep as both won the indoor crowns. Louisiana Tech is back to defend its title, where departed member, UTEP, won on the men's side last season.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000).
