Boise State Men's Tennis to Take on N.C. State

The Boise State University men?™s tennis team heads to Durham, N.C., to compete in the first round of the NCAA Championships, May 13.

The Broncos, ranked No. 26 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will play North Carolina State (No. 40) at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (EST).

Duke, the tournament?™s No. 4 seed and ranked No. 3 in the country, is hosting the regional site. The Blue Devils will host Winthrop in their first-round match.

The winners of each match will square off at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, May 14. The winner of the regional site will advance to the NCAA Division I Men?™s Tennis Championships at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The team championship, hosted by Stanford, will be held May 20-23.

Individual Selections - The Broncos will also send individual selections to compete in the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Luke Shields, a 2005 Singles All-American, was the automatic qualifier from the Western Athletic Conference in singles competition. Shields and senior Thomas Schoeck, 2005 Doubles All-Americans, were the automatic qualifier from the WAC in doubles competition.

Fresno State will also send first team all-WAC honoree Jakub Cech. The senior was chosen as an at-large selection. Fresno State?™s doubles team of Sergui Modoc/Sam Gibbs were chosen as alternates.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 24-29 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 20-23).

WAC TOURNAMENT REVIEW ?“ In another tightly contested battle, top-seeded Boise State defeated second-seeded Fresno State, 4-3. Thomas Schoeck defeated Sergui Modoc 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (4) for the clincher. This is the Broncos second-straight WAC title. Fresno State?™s Jakub Cech was named WAC Player of the Year, while Boise State?™s Greg Patton earned his second-straight WAC Coach of the Year honor.

The top-seeded Fresno State women?™s tennis team captured its fifth-straight WAC Tennis Championship with an intense, 4-3, win over host and second-seed, Boise State. The Broncos were playing in their first WAC Championship title match. Katharina Winterhalter defeated Tatiana Ganzha, 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the match. Fresno State?™s Melanie Gloria earned WAC Freshman and WAC Player of the Year. Bulldog head coach Simon Thibodeau was named WAC Coach of the Year.

The last time that the final was the same for both the men and the women was in 2001. In that season, TCU defeated Fresno State in both the men?™s and women?™s finals.
