San Jose?” San Jose State senior softball players Courtney Lewis and Carlie Hill were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII teams as voted on by the sports information membership of the district. Lewis was named to the first team, while Hill was named to the second team.
Lewis was named to the first team at the utility position as she carries a 3.35 grade point average in business accounting. She was a first team All-Western Athletic Conference selection at utility. The Spartans?™ leadoff hitter finished her Spartan career with a .323 batting average, good for third all-time. Lewis led the Spartans this season with a .312 average with 49 hits, 24 runs scored and five triples. She was also the team?™s top pitcher with a 10-8 record and a 3.28 ERA and 91 strikeouts. Lewis ends her pitching career number-two all-time in saves with seven and seventh in strikeouts with 142.
Hill was a second team selection at first base with a 3.26 gpa in occupational therapy. She was a second team All-WAC at-large selection this season. Hill finished the season with a .298 batting average with 31 hits. She led the team with a .992 fielding percentage and committed just two errors on the season, none during WAC play. Hill ends her Spartan career tied for sixth all-time in home runs with eight including a grand slam she hit in a victory at Utah State this season.
Lewis now advances to the national ballot to be considered for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America team. Hill and Lewis are just the fourth and fifth Spartan players to ever receive this honor and the only two WAC players named to any team this season. Roz Rios is the only Spartan to ever receive Academic All-America honors (1990 and 1991).
