Boise State senior Thomas Schoeck and sophomore Luke Shields dropped their opening round match in doubles competition at the NCAA Men?™s Tennis Championships. The Bronco duo lost, 6-3, 6-4, to No. 12 Brian Hung and Matko Maravic of Michigan. Shields also lost in the first round of the singles tournament. Shields was ousted by Wake Forest?™s Todd Paul (No. 18), 6-4, 6-2, in the Round of 64. Shields, who earned an automatic bid to the championships, finished his season with a record of 25-14.

Junior Jakub Cech was Fresno State?™s lone representative at the NCAA singles tournament May 24-29 at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University. Cech was the first member of the men?™s team to appear in the tournament since Peter Luczak last participated in 2001. Cech won his first round match against Eric Claesson of Mississippi in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Cech was defeated by seventh-seeded Arnau Brugues of Tulsa. Cech, however, had an outstanding season and finished the year ranked No. 48 in the final Fila ITA Rankings.
IN THE POLLS?“The final Fila Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA National Rankings for the 2005-06 were released, and the Boise State men?™s tennis team finished the season ranked 27th. The Bronco men won the 2006 Western Athletic Conference title, advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament and finished the season with a record of 21-7. Fresno State ended the season ranked 46th, while Hawai'i was ranked 70th in the final poll.
Fresno State?™s Jakub Cech ended the season ranked No. 48. Boise State?™s Luke Shields finished the season ranked 53rd nationally, while teammate Thomas Schoeck was ranked 102. In doubles, Schoeck and Shields completed 2005-06 ranked 20th nationally. Fresno State?™s team of Sergui Modoc and Sam Gibbs were ranked No. 44.
BRONCOS FINISH SECOND IN REGION ?“ In the regional rankings, the Bronco men?™s team was ranked second in the Mountain Region (behind Colorado). In the final individual regional rankings, Shields was ranked first; Schoeck was sixth; freshman Clancy Shields was 15th and sophomore Eric Roberson was ranked 23rd. In doubles, Luke Shields and Schoeck were ranked the top doubles team in the region and Stevie Robertson and Clancy Shields were the ninth ranked doubles team. Clancy Shields?™ final singles record in 2005-06 was19-7 while Roberson?™s was 19-12. Clancy Shields and Robertson went 21-4 in doubles.
BRONCOS EARN POSTSEASON AWARDS ?“ Morgan Shepherd, Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields have all been awarded Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region awards. Schoeck won the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award and the John Van Nostrand Memorial future professional award. Other Bronco honorees included Morgan Shepherd, who was named the Mountain Region?™s Assistant Coach of the Year, and Luke Shields, who was named the Mountain Region?™s Player to Watch.
WAC TOURNAMENT REVIEW ?“ In a tightly contested battle, top-seeded Boise State defeated second-seeded Fresno State, 4-3. The Broncos Thomas Schoeck defeated Sergui Modoc 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (4) for the clincher. This is the Broncos second-straight WAC title. Fresno State?™s Jakub Cech was named WAC Player of the Year, while Boise State?™s Greg Patton earned his second-straight WAC Coach of the Year honor.
The last time that the final was the same for both the men and the women was in 2001. In that season, TCU defeated Fresno State in both the men?™s and women?™s finals. The Fresno State women?™ defeated the Boise State women?™ by the same, 4-3 score.
