Giuffre, Harms Named 2005-06 Stan Bates Award Winners

DENVER ? Idaho track and field star Jason Giuffre and Nevada volleyball player Christine Harms have been named as the 2005-06 Western Athletic Conference Stan Bates Award winners. The award is named in honor of former WAC Commissioner Stan Bates and honors the WAC’s top male and female scholar-athletes, recognizing the recipients’ athletic and academic accomplishments. In addition, the awards carry a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Giuffre earned all-conference honors in all four seasons with the Vandals.  He was a member of the 4 x 400m relay teams that placed first and third at Big West Championships events, placed second at the 2006 WAC Outdoor Championships and placed seventh at the 2004 NCAA Regionals.  Additionally, Jason has placed within the top 5 in the 400 meter dash during individual competition at various Big West and WAC Championship events.

Giuffre is a mechanical engineering major who is expected to graduate in December 2006 and has a 3.77 GPA.  He is a three time All-Academic Big West team member and a 2006 Academic All-WAC selection.

Giuffre is also a three-year member of the University of Idaho Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has volunteered in the Moscow community at the Palouse Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross.

Harms is a four-year letterwinner for the Wolf Pack volleyball program.  She ranks second all-time at Nevada with 1,432 career digs and set the single season school record with 473 digs during the 2005 season.  Christine ranks fourth at Nevada with 732 career points.  She captained the volleyball team in 2005 during her final season for the Wolf Pack.  Additionally, Harms was a three-year letterwinner for the Wolf Pack indoor track and field program.

Harms is a civil engineering major expected to graduate in December 2006 and has a 4.00 GPA.  She has been named the Nevada Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year and been selected to the Academic All-WAC team for four consecutive years.  She was also selected for the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in 2004 and 2005 and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Volleyball Second Team in 2005.

Harms has volunteered in the Reno community at the Read Across America, Angel Tree, Penny Drive, and Children’s Ministry Programs during her four years at Nevada.
