The Western Athletic Conference announced its 2006 Preseason all-WAC team and Players of the Year as voted on by the coaches. Fresno State leads the team with four players. Hawai?i, Nevada and San Jose State all placed two on the team, while Utah State placed one. Two-time first-team all-WAC member Cortney Sobrero of Fresno State was named the 2006 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate, Rochelle Jagdeo, was tabbed as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Sobrero earned first-team all-WAC honors in 2005 scoring 13 points on six goals and one assist. The Las Vegas native led Fresno State firing off 80 shots and scoring six goals. The six goals were also sixth best in the WAC. Both her shots and shots-on-goal (32) were career highs.
Jagdeo, a Vacaville, Calif., native, earns her second Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor. Jagdeo also brought home first-team all-WAC honors in 2005, to go along with her Defensive Player of the Year for the regular season. Jagdeo anchored a defense that allowed just five goals in WAC play, helping her goalkeeper, Angie Larsen, set a conference record with 0.159 goals against average.
There are 11 selections on this season’s preseason squad. At the forward position is Sobrero, Nevada sophomore Sammy Miller, San Jose State sophomore Jessica Scott and Utah State senior Charity Weston. In the midfield, there is Fresno State sophomore Alison Sill, Hawai?i junior Jessica Domingo and San Jose State junior Nicole Irwin. On defense, Jagdeo joins Koren Takeyama of Hawai?i and Jessica Wilcox of Nevada. Fresno State senior Angie Larsen was named to the team as goalkeeper after cruising through the 2005 WAC season allowing just one goal.
