DENVER ? Hawai?i first baseman Kris Sanchez and Nevada right-handed pitcher Mario Rivera have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for January 22-28.
Sanchez, a senior from Tucson, Ariz. (Central Arizona CC), was 7-for-11 (.636) in three games for the Rainbows last week. In the season opener against Santa Clara on Friday, he was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. On Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with another double. For the week, he had three doubles, scored three runs, drove in three and was walked three times. It is Sanchez’s first career WAC Hitter of the Week award.
Rivera, a junior from San Bernardino, Calif. (Western Arizona CC), pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and one unearned run in Nevada’s 6-1 win over St. Mary’s on Sunday. He walked one and struck out four in picking up his first win for the Wolf Pack. It is Rivera’s first career WAC Pitcher of the Week.
The other player of the week nomination was junior infielder/outfielder Matt Bowman, Nevada.
