DENVER - San Jose State’s Lauren Mar has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week.
Mar, a sophomore from San Francisco, Calif. (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep), led the Spartans to a 188-160 victory with a team-high three individual wins, plus one first-place relay effort in a dual meet at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, January 6. Mar started off her string of individual victories in her first 200-yard freestyle swim of the season, in a time of 1:57.33. She then swept the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50-yard free in 24.56 seconds before touching first in the 100-yard free in 53.10. Mar had begun the day by swimming the freestyle anchor leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay, which went 1:50.63.
In the relay events meet of the 28th Annual UC Irvine/Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitationals in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday, January 7, Mar took part in six of the 10 Spartan ?A’ relays on the day, helping SJSU compile four second-place, one third-place and one fourth-place finish. She anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 200 medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay, while also swimming the 200 in the 800-yard (100, 200, 500) freestyle relay and the second leg of the 3 x 100-yard backstroke. Her freestyle anchor leg in the 400 medley relay (52.17 seconds), and her 200 time (1:56.57) in the 800 freestyle relay were lifetime-best splits.
Others nominated included Boise State senior Jennifer Dorling and Northern Arizona junior Natalie Hughes.
