TEAM NOTES
BOISE STATE BRONCOS - The Boise State University women’s cross country team continues receive solid contributions from the entire lineup as it posted a second place finish at the Charles Bowles Invitational with 53 points this past week. Breanna Sande led the team and finished in the top 5 for the fourth straight race as she posted a 17:40.70 to finish third on the 5,000-meter course at Bush Park. Cody Eaton once again led the men’s team as he finished in sixth place with a 25:00.95. The Boise State men’s team finished with 176 points for a fifth place finish among the collegiate teams at the Charles Bowles Invitational. Higgs finished in 21st place with a 25:25.50, Foley in 50th place with a 26:12.80 and Lockard in 80th with a 27:19.25.
FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS - The Bulldogs had the week off but will be back in action this week at the UC San Diego Triton Classic on Oct. 6.
HAWAI?I RAINBOW WAHINE - Hawai’i placed seventh overall at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational. Senior Chantelle Wilder was the team’s top finisher for the fourth time this season, placing ninth, in the team’s first mainland competition of the year. Wilder led an eight-member UH contingent with a personal best time of 17:43, nearly 40 seconds better than her performance on the same 5K course last year. In fact, all eight runners recorded PRs, including Annett Wichmann, who knocked off more than a minute, completing the race in 20:46 to finish 106th.
IDAHO VANDALS - Competing with a full squad for the first time this year, the Idaho men took third at the Charles Bowles Invitational out of 20 squads. Each Idaho runner finished in the top half of the field and the team’s top four runners finished in the top 25 among collegiate athletes. The Idaho women also sent a full squad for the first time this season and came away with a team title at the Charles Bowles Invitational. Idaho’s top five runners all finished in the top 13 overall and top eight among collegiate runners. The team won the title by a margin of 27 places over second-place Boise State.
LOUISIANA TECH BULLDOGS - The Bulldog men’s and women’s cross country teams did not compete last week. The team returns to action on Oct. 1 when the squad travels to compete in the Northwestern State University Invitational at Demon Hills Golf Course.
NEVADA WOLF PACK - Nevada’s Christa Avena was the first Wolf Pack runner to cross the finish line, coming in 35th (22:01), at the 6K Stanford Invitational this past week at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. As a team, Nevada finished 11th out of the 28 team field which included No. 1 Stanford. Four of Nevada’s seven runners competing in the 6K race were underclassmen, Natalia Jarawka, Samantha Davis, Janet Martinez and Maritza Garcia. This meet marked the second time this season that Avena has been the first Nevada runner to cross the finish line. She was also the Pack’s top finisher at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree on Sept. 15. Avena finished 35th out of 241 runners at the Stanford Invitational while Jarawka (22:08) came in 40th in her first career 6K race.
NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES - New Mexico State did not compete this past week. The team will be back in action on Oct. 5 at the Arizona State Invitational.
SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS - The San Jose State men split the team into two groups this past weekend. The first group ran at the Notre Dame Invitational in Indiana, while the second group ran in the Stanford Invitational. Dating back to the 2006 Notre Dame Invitational, Sam Wambugu has been the top Spartan finisher in five of the last seven races. David Blausey set a new top 8K time at the Stanford Invitational. The SJSU women also split into two groups this past week, competing in both the Notre Dame and Stanford Invitationals. At the Notre Dame Invitational, SJSU placed two runners in the top 40. Arely Marquez’s time (19:06.00) was the second-fastest 5K time recorded by an Spartan runner this season. Jenna Hicks and Jessica Gonzales set new personal 5K career times.
UTAH STATE AGGIES - Utah State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the University of Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 29 with the men’s team placing 13th, while the women’s team finished 14th. Junior Seth Wold led the Aggie men placing 31st in the 8,000 meter race with a time of 24:03. On the women’s side, Aggie senior Stacie Dorius led the team in the 6,000-meter race, placing 55th with a time of 21:33.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP ? The 2007 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Logan, Utah. This year’s championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 27 at the American West Heritage Center. Host Utah State’s men and women swept the 2006 WAC Championship in Fresno, Calif.

NCAA REGIONALS ? The 2007 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Saturday, Nov. 10. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Eugene, Ore. (University of Oregon). The Mountain Region will be held in Riverdale, Utah. (Weber State University), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (University of Arkansas) in Fayetteville, Ark.
