New Mexico State 3, San Jose State 0

LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The No. 18 New Mexico State volleyball team swept San Jose State (30-20, 30-28, 30-17) at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. Saturday, Oct. 20 to go to 19-3 on the season, while taking their WAC record to 10-1.

Junior Lindsey Yon (San Antonio, Texas) led the Aggies with another double-double picking up 15 kills and eleven digs, while junior Krystal Torres (Las Cruces, Mayfield HS) was the defensive leader with 19 digs and she also added five assists.  Head coach Mike Jordan was very pleased with the way his team attacked the ball.

Middle blockers senior Kim Oguh (El Paso, Hanks HS) and junior Amber Simpson (Quincy, Ill.) also played well as they added 12 and 11 kills each.  Oguh also added seven block assists while Simpson had four.

The Aggies went on an early 6-1 run with sophomore Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) serving six straight times during that run.  Oguh and Yon led the way in game one with four and five kills respectively.

Game two was a lot closer with 14 ties and seven lead changes, but Oguh and Simpson played dominant and put down five kills each to take their team to a 30-28 victory.

Nevada 3, Louisiana Tech 0

Ruston, La. ?  Nevada(10-8, 7-4 WAC) volleyball team swept Louisiana Tech(6-19, 1-11 WAC) by scores of 30-21, 31-29, and 30-24 in a Western Athletic Conference match at Lambright Intramural Gym in Ruston, La. Saturday afternoon.  With the victory the Wolf Pack won their 10th match of the season improving 10-8 overall and 7-4 in WAC play.  The Lady  Techsters dropped to 6-19 on the season and 1-11 in league play.  The Pack won both matches from LTU this season and improved to 10-0 versus the Lady Techsters in WAC action.

In game one Nevada jumped to a 4-1 lead and the Lady Techsters were unable to recover as the Pack went on to take the first game 30-21.  Senior Karly Sipherd ended the game with a kill off an assist from fellow senior Ashley Miller.  The Pack hit .152 in the game and held LTU to a .088 attack percentage.

Game two was tied six times and there were two lead changes before the Pack pulled out the 31-29 victory to go in front 2-0 in the match. Nevada trailed 29-27 but following a Pack timeout scored the final four points of the game to claim victory.  Back to back attack errors by LTU’s Shannon Phillips tied the game at 29-29.  Sophomore Jorgan Staker and freshman Lindsay Baldwin had kills off assists from Miller to score the final two points of the game and give the Pack the win.  Offensively Nevada hit .149 and LTU .095 in game three.

The Pack was looking to end the match in three games and did just that winning the final game of the day 30-24.  There were six ties in the final game with the last coming at 10-10.  Nevada scored the next two points and never trailed the rest of the game on the way to victory.  Nevada posted its best attack percentage of the match in game three at .379 as did LTU at.149.

Sipherd led the Pack with 12 kills and senior Teal Ericson was also in double figures with 10.  Setter Ashley Miller posted her team leading eighth double-double of the season finishing with 30 assists and 10 digs.  Libero Allison Hernandez recorded a team-high 14 digs in the match.

Shannon Phillips topped the Lady Techsters with a match-high 16 kills.   Setter Jillian Walker dished out a match-high 32 assists.  Brittany Nakamura and Taylor Fritz led the team with 15 and 10 digs respectively.

Utah State 3, Boise State 0

BOISE, Idaho - Two nights after tying the school record with 24 kills in a three-game sweep against Idaho, Amanda Nielson duplicated the feat by tying the school record again with 24 more kills to lead Utah State's volleyball team to a three-game win (31-29, 30-19, 30-28) at Boise State Saturday night.

Utah State improved to 11-10 on the season and 8-4 in the Western Athletic Conference with the win, while Boise State fell to 4-17 overall and 1-10 in league play with the loss.

Nielson, a senior opposite side hitter from West Valley City, Utah (Granger HS) tied the school record for most kills in a three-game match for the second straight contest with 24. Former Aggie Amy Crosbie (1998-2001) set the record for kills in a three-game match with 24 in a loss at Pacific during the 2000 season.

Nielson, who also had 11 digs and two blocks in the match, recorded nine kills in game one, eight in game two and seven in game three as she finished the match by hitting .353 (24-6-51). USU also got an outstanding performance for sophomore middle blocker Danielle Taylor (Springville, Utah) who recorded a career-high 12 kills and hit .500 (12-3-18) in the match.

Jeanette Jenkins led Boise State with 10 kills and hit .308 overall.

Utah State opened the match by hitting a blistering .405 (19-4-37) in game one as it recorded the two-point win. USU then coasted to an 11-point win in game two as it hit .361 (17-4-36). In the third and final game, Utah State hit .378 (23-6-45) to record the three-game sweep.

Overall, Utah State hit a season-high .381 (59-114-118) in the match as compared to a .151 (40-22-119) hitting percentage for Boise State. USU also recorded 19 more digs (52-33) and 3.5 more team blocks (5.5-2.0), while BSU had one more service ace (5-4) and four fewer service errors (11-7).
