WAC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week Announced

DENVER ? San Jose State senior Brie Marhenke has been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, for the week of Oct. 15-21. This is the second career WAC Athlete of the Week honor for Marhenke. 

Marhenke, a native of Carmichael, Calif. (Oregon State), was a two-time individual and five-time relay winner in a pair of dual meets at conference foe Boise State last weekend. Coming into the weekend as the top-ranked swimmer in the WAC in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, Marhenke timed a 23.57 in the 50-yard freestyle, winning by over a second, and clocked a 52.30 in the 100-yard freestyle to win by over two full seconds. She also was a member of five winning relays, including the 850, 400, 200 and 100-yard freestyle relays and the 400-yard medley relay, collecting first-place finishes in each of the five relays. Marhenke led the Spartans to a victory on the second day of the dual with Boise State, winning by a narrow margin, 95-92.

Other nominees included:  Tara Hahto of Boise State earned top honors in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 200-yard IM against San Jose State, notching career-bests in each of the three events ... Courtney Eads of Nevada placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 400-yard IM and was a part of two third-place relays, the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay, helping the Wolf Pack place fourth at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
