DENVER ? San Jose State senior Brie Marhenke has been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, for the week of Oct. 8.
Marhenke, a native of Carmichael, Calif. (Oregon State), marked her return to competitive swimming with a pair of individual wins in the sprint freestyle events during the season-opening dual meet at perennial national powerhouse Stanford on Friday, October 5. Marhenke, who red-shirted the 2006-07 season after earning two individual gold medals at the 2006 WAC Championship, sprinted 23.58 to win the 50-meter freestyle by over a full second. She then turned in a time of 52.07 in the 100-meter freestyle to capture first place in the event. The two-time team captain also swam the third leg of the 200-meter freestyle relay, leading her team to a victory in the relay as well.
The Spartans will play host to their first of four home meets this Saturday, October 13 when UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz make the trip to the Aquatics Center for a tri-meet in San Jose, Calif.
