DENVER ? Louisiana Tech’s Matthew Harvey and Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for October.
Harvey, a sophomore from Georgetown, Texas (Georgetown HS), won the individual title in the only tournament the Bulldogs played in last month, Tech’s own Squire Creek Invitational. Harvey had a three-round total of 209 (74-71-64: -7) to win the tournament by one stroke. In the final round, he shot a tournament-record 64 which included an eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18. The 64 was also the second lowest round in Louisiana Tech history. A field of 96 golfers from 18 schools?including seven in the top 100?participated in the invitational. Harvey’s performance helped the Bulldogs to a third place finish in the tournament.
Nakashima, a senior from Wailuku, Hawaii (Baldwin HS), played in three tournaments last month. She opened October with a six-over 222 at the Heather Farr Invitational in Broomfield, Colo., finishing in a tie for 14th place. At the Price’s Give ?Em Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., she placed third with a five-over 221. The Vandals finished third and second, respectively, in the two tournaments. Nakashima also tied for 41st at the UNLV Collegiate Showdown at the end of the month where she shot a 72 and 73 in the final two rounds to overcome an opening round 81. For the month, she had a 74.3 stroke average over her nine rounds.
Other men nominated: John Baranco, Boise State; Todd Angel, Fresno State; Ben Weyland, Idaho; Matt Edwards, New Mexico State; Peter Gibbs, San Jose State; and Devin Daniels, Utah State.
Other women nominated: Laura Luethke, Fresno State; and Suteera Chanachai, New Mexico State.
