DENVER ? Boise State’s Zacharias Arnos and Idaho’s Melinda Owen have been named the Western Athletic Conference men and women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Arnos, a freshman from Nicosia, Greece (Archbishop Mauarios III Lyceum), won the triple jump with an improvement on his previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and placed second in the long jump at last week’s Boise State Team Invitational. Arnos’ winning triple jump mark of 51-0.00 (15.54m) is first in the WAC and 19th in the nation so far this season. Arnos’ long jump mark of 22-5.25 (6.84) is eighth in the WAC this indoor season.
Owen, a junior from Polson, Mont. (Polson HS), cleared a provisional-qualifying height of 13-5 3/4 to beat her own school record by half an inch at the Husky Classic in Seattle last weekend. Owen finished first among collegiate competitors and fifth overall. Owen’s mark is ninth in the nation and tops in the WAC by over a foot. Owen is also ranked seventh in the Feb. 13 Trackwire Dandy Dozen.
