Boise State Men and Cal State Northridge Women are 2007 WAC Indoor Track and Field Champions
NAMPA - The Boise State men and Cal State Northridge women captured the 2007 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday night at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho. It is Boise State's third trophy in four years, and Cal State Northridge's first WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship.
In a night that came down to the last race to determine both champions, the Boise State men edged out Utah State, 128 to 126. Idaho finished third with 112 points, the most from an Idaho team in a WAC Championship. Cal State Northridge finished fourth with 94 points, followed by Louisiana Tech in fifth with 65 points.
The women crowned a new champion, as Cal State Northridge beat last year's champion, Louisiana Tech, by 2.5 points, 117.5-114. Boise State improved a spot from last year, finishing third with 102 points, followed by Utah State with 90.5 points. Idaho came in fifth place with 70 points, and Hawai'i moved up a spot from last year to sixth with 53.5 points. Nevada took seventh with 50.5 points, followed by New Mexico State (38) and Fresno State (26).
For the men's individual awards (voted upon by the coaches), Cal State Northridge junior Justin Johnson and Idaho junior Russ Winger garnered co-outstanding performers of the year. Utah State's Tony Jones earned Freshman of the Year, while senior DJ Smith picked up two golds (60m and 200m) and 20 points to earn the Men's High Point Winner. Their coach, Utah State's Gregg Gensel, won Coach of the Year Honors.
For the women's individual awards (voted upon by the coaches), Louisiana Tech senior Nina Gilbert earned Outstanding Performer of the Year. Cal State Northridge's Shelese Ruffin picked up Freshman of the Year, while her coach, Cal State Northridge's Don Strametz, brought home the Coach of the Year award. New Mexico State senior Sandra Anane captured 25 points and two golds (long jump and triple jump) to become the Women's High Point Winner.
