DENVER ? San Jose State first baseman Kyle Bellows and Louisiana Tech right-handed pitcher Andrew Alsup have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 19-25.

Bellows, a freshman San Jose, Calif. (Santa Teresa HS), hit .600 (9-15) in four games last week as the Spartans won three of them to improve to 9-4 on the season.  Bellows had multiple hits, scored at least one run, and drove in at least one run in each of the four games. In last Tuesday’s win over California, he was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.  On Sunday, he was 2-for-4 with five RBI and hit two solo home runs as San Jose State beat Loyola Marymount, 15-7, to win the series.  For the week, he scored eight runs, drove in nine, hit three doubles and two home runs and was walked four times. It is Bellows’ first career WAC Hitter of the Week award and first for a Spartan player this year.

Alsup, a senior from Ruston, La. (Ruston HS), picked up two wins in three relief appearances last week.  In 4.2 innings of work against Nicholls State on Tuesday, he allowed no runs, four hits and two walks in the 5-2 victory. On Friday, he got his second victory after pitching two innings and giving up no runs, one hit and no walks against Louisiana-Monroe.  For the week, he had an ERA of 1.23 in 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, one earned run and two walks.  It is Alsup’s second career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and third for a Bulldog pitcher this year.

The other player of the week nominations were junior first baseman Steve Susdorf, Fresno State; junior outfielder Evan Zimny, Hawai?i; junior outfielder Brian Rike, Louisiana Tech; junior outfielder/DH Terry Walsh, Nevada; and freshman DH Leo Aguirre, New Mexico State.
 
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Brandon Burke, Fresno State; senior Tyler Davis, Hawai?i; junior Ryan Rodriguez, Nevada; and freshman Anthony Arrieta, New Mexico State.
