DENVER ? Louisiana Tech outfielder Brian Rike and Hawai?i left-handed pitcher Mark Rodrigues have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 5-11.
Rike, a junior from Richmond, Texas (Stephen F. Austin HS), hit .368 (7-19) with three home runs and nine RBI over five games last week. He scored a total of eight runs in the games and extended his current hitting streak to nine games. Rike leads the WAC in home runs (12), hits (35), runs (37), stolen bases (9) and RBI (35).
Rodrigues, a senior from Koloa, Kauai (Kauai HS), started and pitched seven innings to get the win in a 4-0 victory over 24th-ranked Arizona on Saturday. He allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out four to improve to 5-1 on the year.
The other player of the week nominations were freshman third baseman Tommy Mendonca, Fresno State; senior shortstop Eli Christensen, Hawai?i; senior outfielder Tyler Hardt, New Mexico State; and freshman outfielder Tim Wheeler, Sacramento State.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Clayton Allison, Fresno State; sophomore Dylan Moseley, Louisiana Tech; senior Brian Gausman, New Mexico State; and junior Alvaro Orozco, Sacramento State.
