DENVER ? Fresno State’s Jennifer Shipley and San Jose State’s Rosco Valentine were named the Western Athletic Conference women’s and men’s Golfers of the Week, respectively, for March 12-18.
Shipley, a sophomore from Clovis, Calif. (Clovis HS), went head-to-head with Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima in a playoff to win the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational title. Shipley started the third round tied for seventh with scores of 71 and 70 and moved to the top position after an outstanding third round score of 64 to finish 11-under. Shipley recorded eight birdies in the third round for a career low score of 64. She won after a 3-hole playoff when she chipped in on hole ten to make par. This was Shipley’s best collegiate finish and her first individual tournament title.
Valentine, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand (Branham HS), notched his second top-five finish of 2006-07 and his first of the spring season tying for fifth place at the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic, March 12-13. Valentine, who fired an even par 72 for the final 18 holes, posted a 2-under par 54-hole total of 214 (68-74-72) on the par 72, 6,949 yards Sunnyside Golf Course. He was one of 10 golfers in the 95-player field to finish under par. His 68 tied for the best of anyone in the first round.
Other women nominated, included Idaho junior Kelly Nakashima; and New Mexico State senior Inah Park.
Other men nominated, included Fresno State sophomore Matt Ryan; and Nevada freshman Jared Becher.
