DENVER ? Boise State’s Erik Whitsitt and Annika Hjelm have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Mar. 19-Mar. 25.
Whitsitt, a senior from Pueblo, Colo. (Idaho State/South HS), qualified for NCAA regionals in the shot put at the Broncos’ season-opening meet, as he finished first in the event with a toss of 60-1.00 (18.31m). Whitsitt, who finished fourth at last year’s outdoor conference meet, recorded a career high with the toss to earn his second consecutive trip to regionals as a Bronco.
Hjelm, a sophomore from Huddinge, Sweden (Sjodalsgymnasiet HS), set a school-record hammer throw of 197-feet, 5-inches (60.18-meters) at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational, March 23. The mark eclipsed the previous school record by more than two feet, as well as launched past the second-place effort by more than 21 feet, and qualified her for NCAA regionals.
