DENVER ? Nevada catcher Konrad Schmidt and Hawai?i left-handed pitcher Ian Harrington have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 26-March 4.
Schmidt, a senior from Petaluma, Calif. (Arizona), hit .667 (6-9) in a three-game sweep of UNLV over the weekend. In Friday’s 5-3 win, he was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. On Saturday, he was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the 7-4 victory. Schmidt finished the week going 1-for-2 on Sunday and was hit by a pitch in the 2-1 win.
Harrington, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii (Mid-Pacific Institute), earned his third win of the year by pitching seven innings of Thursday’s 20-1 win over Chicago State. Harrington allowed just one unearned run, six hits and two walks while striking out eight in the victory. The Rainbows went on to sweep Chicago State in five games.
The other player of the week nominations were junior outfielder Steve Susdorf, Fresno State; junior infielder Jonathan Hee, Hawai?i; junior outfielder Brian Rike, Louisiana Tech; and sophomore first baseman Gabe Jacobo, Sacramento State.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Clayton Allison, Fresno State; senior Brandon Hudson, Louisiana Tech; junior Kyle Howe, Nevada; and junior Alvaro Orozco, Sacramento State.
