DENVER ? Fresno State’s Rudolf Siwy and Utah State’s Erin Monson have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 2?8.
Siwy, a sophomore from Trinec, Czech Republic (Gymnazium Trinec), was outstanding last week as the Bulldogs won two matches. On April 5 against San Diego, Siwy and doubles partner Taylot Leiby trailed 1-0 before winning eight-straight games to capture an 8-1 victory. In singles, he dominated Chris Coetzee, 6-3, 6-3, as the Bulldogs went on the beat the Torerors, 5-2. On April 7, Siwy and Leiby again won in doubles, defeating UC Santa Barbara’s Barton and Finkelstein, 8-4. In singles, Siwy won in straight sets over Anders Dalskov, helping Fresno State to a 6-1 win over the Gauchos.
Monson, a freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah (Skyline), topped Mariel Tinnirello (7-5, 6-2) as the Aggies defeated WAC-foe Idaho, 4-3. Monson also teamed up with her sister, Lauren, to beat Idaho’s Tinnirello and Ruman, 9-7. Against San Jose State, the Aggie duo defeated Spartans Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone at number one doubles, 8-6. Erin Monson also defeated Courtney Koenigsfeld, 6-0, 6-2 as Utah State also stopped San Jose State, 4-3.
