DENVER ? Boise State’s Piotr Dilaj and Fresno State’s Anastasia Petukhova have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 16 ? 22. This is the first player of the week honor for both this season.
Dilaj, a junior from Gdansk, Poland (V Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace w Gdansku), won two singles matches and one doubles match for No. 23 Boise State as the Broncos went 2-0 against Eastern Washington and UC Irvine, Saturday, Apr. 21, at the Appleton Tennis Center. Dilaj went 2-0 at the No. 2 position, earning his second and third victories of the season at No. 2 singles. Dilaj opened with a three-set battle against EWU’s Kyle Schraeder prevailing 6-2, 5-7 and 7-5. He came from behind against Victor Lamm of UC Irvine for the win 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Dilaj and Luke Shields, ranked No. 56 nationally, dominated EWU’s Jonathan Davis and Patrick 8-1.
Petukhova, a freshman from Moscow, Russia (A.M. Gorky), went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last week as the Bulldogs beat Cal Poly and Pacific, each by the score of 7-0. At No. 2 doubles, Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova beat Cal Poly's Brady and Bradford 8-1, then downed Pacific's Arens and Mrazovic, 8-3. At No. 3 singles, Petukhova breezed past Cal Poly's Shannon Brady 6-0, 6-1 and then beat Pacific's Svenja Arens 6-3, 6-2 to complete a perfect week.
