LAS CRUCES, NM - Idaho held on to win the 2007 WAC Women’s Golf Championship at the New Mexico State University Golf Course after carding a three round total of 42 over, 906. The Vandals took the lead in the second round after shooting a five over, 294, the best single-round team score of the championship. Idaho stayed ahead of San Jose State (45 over, 909), Hawai’i (47 over, 911) and Nevada (51 over, 915) in the final round to win its first WAC Women’s Golf Championship. San Jose State finished second after ending the first round in seventh place.
San Jose State was led by 2007 WAC Individual Champion Erica Moston who carded a three day total of one over, 217 to win by seven strokes. Moston saved her best round of the championship for the final day and was the only player to score under par during the final round firing a two under, 70. Fresno State’s Laura Luethke and Idaho’s Renee Skidmore tied for second place with an eight over, 224. Skidmore was joined by teammates Kelly Nakashima (T-8th), Cassie Castleman (T-9th) and Beth Stonecypher (T-9th) to place four Vandals in the top-ten.
Also announced today were the all-WAC teams and Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards as voted upon by the seven coaches in the league. Hawai’i senior Dale Gammie was named Player of the Year, Cristina Corpus was named Freshman of the Year and Idaho’s Brad Rickel was named Coach of the Year.
