Boise State won its third-straight WAC Men's Tennis Title with a 4-0 win over second-seeded Fresno State. There was only one match in the men's tournament that was not a 4-0 sweep when No. 4 Nevada defeated No. 5 New Mexico State in the quarterfinals.
The Broncos were led by WAC Player of the Year Luke Shields who earned a win at No. 1 singles over Fresno State's Jakub Cech, 6-2, 6-4. Boise State head coach Greg Patton was named WAC Coach of the Year, while Hawai?i's Andreas Webber was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
For the second-straight year, Fresno State defeated Boise State in the championship match of the WAC Women's Tennis Championship. The Bulldogs shut out the Broncos, 4-0. This is the sixth-straight title for the Bulldogs who will now represent the WAC in the NCAA Tournament.
No. 2 Fresno State defeated No. 6 Hawai?i in the first semifinal of the men's WAC Tennis Championship. The Bulldogs advanced to their second-sraight title match. Top-seeded Boise State beat No. 3 Nevada. Both matches were 4-0 shut outs. Last year, the Broncos stopped the Bulldogs in a thrilling 4-3 match to win the title. This is the second-straight year that Boise State and Fresno State played in both the men and women's final.
In the semifinals on Friday of the WAC Women's Tennis Championship in Boise, Idaho, defending champion and No. 1 seed Fresno State defeated No. 4 Idaho, 4-0, while No. 2 Boise State beat No. 3 Nevada by the same score.
In the first men's quarterfinal on Friday, second-seeded Fresno State stopped Idaho, 4-0. In a closer contest, fourth-seeded Nevada defeated fifth-seeded New Mexico State, 4-2, and Hawai?i upset third-seeded Utah State, 4-0.
The WAC Women's Tennis Championship began on Thursday, April 26 with No. 8 San Jose State defeating No. 9 Louisiana Tech, 4-0 in the first match of the day. In the first quarterfinal match, No. 3 Nevada stopped No. 6 Utah State by the same, 4-0 score. Host and second seed, Boise State, beat Hawai?i, 4-0, and Fresno State defeated San Jose State, 4-0. In the closest match of the day, Idaho stopped New Mexico State, 4-3.
The Boise State men are currently ranked No. 23 in the ITA rankings. The Broncos are led by junior Luke Shields who is ranked No. 15. Fresno State is currently ranked No. 72, while the Nevada men are ranked No. 98. For the women, Fresno State's Melanie Gloria, the nation's third-ranked player, is the reigning WAC Player of the Year. Fresno State is currently ranked No. 16 in the country. Boise State is ranked No. 44, while Nevada is tied for 61st.
