GOLFER OF THE WEEK ? Boise State’s Troy Merritt was named the Western Athletic Conference men’s Golfer of the Week for March 20-26.
Merritt, a junior from Fridley, Minn. (Spring Lake Park HS), fired a 13-under par, 203, to collect his first collegiate individual title by two strokes in the Ron Moore Invitational at the Palm Valley Golf Club at Goodyear, Ariz. Merritt remained consistent throughout the tournament shooting a 67 (-5) in the first round, a 68 (-4) in the second round and a 68 (-4) in the final round. Merritt also was very effective on the greens as he did not three-putt throughout the tournament.
Nevada freshman Taylor Coffman was also nominated.
LOUISIANA TECH WINS HAL SUTTON INVITATIONAL ? Louisiana Tech shot three-under-par on the first playoff hole to defeat UL-Lafayette in a sudden death playoff and capture the 2007 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate played at Stone Bridge Country Club.
The tournament win was the first by the Bulldogs since capturing the 2005 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate. “I’ve been saying all year that we were close,” Coach Jean Hall said. “Even this tournament we didn’t play our best golf but we did enough to win. I’m hoping we carry the momentum into next week’s tournament and then the WAC Championships.”
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP ? The 2007 Wells Fargo WAC Championship travels to Reno, Nevada and the Hidden Valley Country Club. This year’s Championship will be held April 30-May 2.
